Turkish journalist Mustafa Ünal, who has been imprisoned for 7 years, has been arbitrarily denied his right to parole.

Mustafa Ünal, the Ankara Representative of Zaman newspaper, who was sentenced to 10 years and 6 months in prison during the unlawful Gülenist investigation, was not released on parole despite being eligible for it.

Mustafa Ünal’s daughter-in-law and lawyer, Büşra Şimşek Ünal, announced that although Ünal had completed the required period in prison on May 30, he was not released due to the arbitrary attitude of the Silivri 9th High-Security Prison Administrative Observation Board.

In a post on Twitter, Büşra Şimşek Ünal said, “Journalist MUSTAFA ÜNAL, who has been in prison for 7 years, is not being released due to the arbitrary attitude of Silivri 9th High-Security Prison, even though he had the right to be released on parole on May 30. Despite serving his sentence, he will spend another holiday in prison.”

The Silivri 9th High-Security Prison Administrative Observation Board postponed the release of journalist Mustafa Ünal, who obtained parole rights on May 30, for two months during its first meeting.

The prison observation board stated in its report that it did not find Mustafa Ünal’s statement of “I have no affiliation with any organization” sincere and noted that there was “insufficient conviction” for his release.

The parole status of Mustafa Ünal, who was sentenced to 10 years and 6 months in prison for 8 opinion columns, will be re-evaluated by the Prison Observation Board after 60 days.
