The initial statement of journalist Mehmet Kamış, who was detained in Çeşme and arrested in Istanbul on charges of ‘attempted coup’ by the 26th Heavy Penal Court, has emerged. According to the statement published in pro-government media, Mehmet Kamış reacted to the police officers attempting to forcibly handcuff him, saying, “You are doing it wrong. You will be held accountable for this!” During the prosecutor’s interrogation, Kamış reportedly stated, “I do not see the Gülen movement as a criminal organization. The activities I engaged in, both in the past and until my capture, were professional and friendly relationships.”
When asked about his identity during the arrest process after leaving his house, Mehmet Kamış initially remained silent and did not provide an answer. No identification was found on him during the body search. According to Sabah, a media outlet aligned with the government, Kamış, while being arrested with handcuffs, claimed that he was being treated unfairly and said, “You will be held accountable for this!” During the search, 2,700 Turkish liras in cash were found on Mehmet Kamış.
FIRST STATEMENT REVEALED
In the initial verbal interview conducted by the police, Mehmet Kamış stated, “A few days before the coup, I came to Çeşme to attend an exhibition. I continued to live in Çeşme until the day I was caught after the coup attempt. I had no knowledge that I was being sought. If I had known, I would have come and given a statement. I do not see FETÖ as a criminal organization. The activities I engaged in, both in the past and until my capture, were professional and friendly relationships. I will be released in 2-3 months. I will return to İzmir.”
