In an initiative spearheaded by Advocates of Silenced Turkey (AST), a U.S.-based organization, the 2023 song contest aims to shed light on human rights violations in Turkey through the power of art. This year, the competition holds special significance as it is dedicated to the memory of Yusuf Kerim Sayın, a brave individual who battled cancer during his mother’s incarceration and recently passed away.
The “Sing for the Oppressed” song contest is set to mark its third edition, with contestants having the opportunity to submit their entries until January 15, 2024. The competition promises cash prizes for the top three performers, with a generous $3,000 awarded to the first-place winner, $2,000 for the second place, and $1,000 for the third place. Participants are welcome to perform in the language of their choice, but they must ensure that their songs addressing human rights themes remain original. Notably, the 2021 first prize was clinched by Berkus from Belgium with their composition “Remember Me!” while Grifon secured last year’s victory with “Please.”
A distinguished panel of judges will preside over the preliminary selection process. However, the ultimate champions will be determined by popular vote during a special online program scheduled for Sunday, February 18th. The triumphant artists will be unveiled during this broadcast.
